Why the sticker price alone misleads
At the grocery store, the number in the biggest font is rarely the fairest way to compare two products. A 12-ounce jar at $3.49 can cost more per ounce than a 16-ounce jar at $4.29, yet the smaller jar looks cheaper if you only glance at the shelf edge. Packaging designers know this. Tall bottles, shallow tubs, and ‘value’ banners train your eye toward total price and away from density of product.
Unit price is the cost of a standardized quantity—usually per ounce, per pound, per 100 grams, or per each. Once both items share the same unit, the comparison becomes honest. That habit matters most when brands change package sizes quietly (sometimes called shrinkflation) or when warehouse clubs sell multipacks that look like bargains until you divide by how many usable servings you get.
This article is a practical method you can use on a weekday shop. It is not financial advice and it does not assume every store labels perfectly. Some chains print unit prices clearly; others bury them in tiny type or omit them for sale items. When the tag is missing or ambiguous, you can still compute the unit price yourself with the net weight on the package.
Find the comparable unit before you do math
Start by naming the unit that makes sense for that aisle. Liquids and pourable foods often use fluid ounces or milliliters. Solids use weight ounces, pounds, or grams. Countable items—tea bags, yogurt cups, snack bars—are often better compared per each or per serving only after you confirm serving sizes are similar. Mixing weight ounces with fluid ounces is a classic trap: they are not the same measurement.
If one peanut butter is labeled 16 oz and another 454 g, convert one so both share a base. Sixteen ounces is about 454 grams, so those two jars are essentially the same net weight. A 28-ounce jar is 1.75 pounds. A 2-liter bottle is roughly 67.6 fluid ounces. You do not need perfect precision for a shopping decision; you need enough consistency that a 5–10% difference is visible and a 30% difference is obvious.
Watch for ‘drained weight’ versus ‘net weight’ on canned goods. Net weight includes packing liquid. If you discard brine or syrup, drained weight is closer to what you eat. Two cans with identical net weight can deliver different edible product. When labels list both, prefer drained weight for apples, tuna packed in water, and similar items.
The core formula and a worked aisle example
Unit price = package price ÷ quantity in your chosen unit. Example: cereal A is $4.80 for 12 ounces → $0.40 per ounce. Cereal B is $5.60 for 16 ounces → $0.35 per ounce. Cereal B is cheaper per ounce even though its sticker is higher. If you eat a fixed amount each week, buying B saves money over time; if you only wanted a small box and the rest would go stale, A might still be rational—unit price informs the decision; it does not erase waste and preference.
Worked multipack example: single yogurt cups are $1.00 each (5.3 oz). A four-pack is $3.60 for four cups of the same size. Per cup, the multipack is $0.90. Per ounce, both are the same product density, so the multipack wins on unit price by 10%. If the multipack uses smaller cups (4 oz) at the same $3.60, then each cup is $0.90 still, but per ounce you have 16 ounces total → $0.225/oz versus the single cup’s $1.00 ÷ 5.3 ≈ $0.189/oz. Suddenly the ‘deal’ is worse on a true unit basis.

- Same product form (both creamy peanut butter, both dry pasta)
- Same measurement type (weight vs volume vs count)
- Similar quality tier if you care (organic vs conventional can differ for reasons beyond price)
- Account for waste: bones, peels, packing liquid, unused multipack portions
Packaging tricks that inflate perceived value
Opaque containers and curved bottles hide how much air sits above the product. A tall chip bag can look generous while the fill line is halfway down. Weight on the label—not bag height—is the honest signal. If two bags claim the same net weight, their unit prices decide the better buy; if weights differ, normalize before comparing.
‘20% more free’ banners need a baseline. Twenty percent more free versus what prior size? If the old jar was 10 ounces and the new one is 12 ounces at a higher absolute price, compute both unit prices. Sometimes the promo is real; sometimes the non-promo competitor next to it is still cheaper per ounce.
Sale tags can omit unit price or show unit price based on the regular price. Read carefully. A BOGO deal on perishable produce only helps if you will eat both units before they spoil. Unit price on the doubled quantity can look excellent on paper and poor in your trash can.
Store brands, premium brands, and when unit price is not enough
Private-label items often win on unit price for staples like sugar, flour, canned tomatoes, and frozen vegetables. That does not mean every store brand matches every national brand in taste or performance. Treat unit price as the first filter, then sample once. If the cheaper option meets your standard, you have a durable win.
For specialty items—olive oil grades, coffee origins, spice freshness—unit price still tells you what you pay per quantity, but quality differences may justify a higher unit cost. The goal is awareness, not forcing every purchase to the mathematical minimum. Knowing you are paying a premium on purpose feels different from accidentally paying a premium because of packaging.
Coupon stacking and loyalty discounts change the effective price. Apply discounts before dividing. A $5 jar with a $1 coupon is a $4 jar for unit-price math. Manufacturer coupons that require buying two items should be evaluated on the combined quantity and combined out-of-pocket cost.
A quick in-aisle checklist
When two options compete, run this sequence in under a minute. First, confirm you are comparing like with like. Second, read net quantity and convert if needed. Third, divide price by quantity. Fourth, adjust for waste, unused multipack risk, and whether a sale requires buying more than you need. Fifth, decide.
If numbers are close—within a few cents per ounce—pick the one you will actually finish and enjoy. Tiny unit-price gaps rarely repay mental energy. Large gaps, especially on weekly staples, compound across a year of shopping trips.
Over time you will memorize rough benchmarks for the items you buy often: a sane range for rice per pound, milk per gallon, or coffee per ounce. Those benchmarks make odd packaging stand out immediately, which is the real skill behind unit-price literacy.
